Akha Hill Headdress (Thailand/Myanmar/China) #1
And now, a rare and unusual listing....
This is a headdress from the Akha Hill Tribe in Thailand. These people migrated from Burma into the mountainous regions of Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, and China. Several still practice their own customs, and their women are known for wearing this distinct style of headdress.
I purchased a set of these beautiful headdresses from an Akha Hill craftswoman over a decade ago for a dance piece I performed with my troupe in New York City. However, it has been sitting in my closet ever since.
This particular headdress has a cloth cap base upon which several metal balls over various sizes are sewn. There are several beads and coins added amongst these, and several coins that make "tassles" on the sides, which end in hammered triangular shaped pieses. There are also feathers of some sort attached to the large metal plank in the back (which itself has patterns hammered to it). There are also seed bead tassles at the back and attaching the coin tassles.
A fantastically complicated and beautiful piece!
MEASUREMENTS:
CAP DEPTH (measured from top of forehead, downward): 4"
INNER CAP CIRCUMFERENCE: 29"
Side tassles LENGTH (metal coins and triangular metal piece): 10.25"
BACK METAL PIECE: 9" high
